The Bernard Echols Scholarship Fund was established on September 4, 1970, born from both deep loss and a powerful commitment to uplift future generations. The fund honors the life of Master Bernard Echols, a beloved nine-year-old whose life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident. His parents, the late Mr. Elgin Echols and Mrs. Ola Mae Echols of Carrollton, Georgia, showed tremendous strength and grace in allowing their family’s tragedy to inspire purpose and hope for others.

In the wake of a heartbreaking tragedy, Mr. Eugene Penson, Sr., a devoted member of the Pure Holiness Church of God (PHC), felt a calling to ensure that the life and legacy of Master Bernard Echols would continue through opportunity and service to others. From that vision, a mission was born—one rooted in faith, hope, and education.

Established in 1970 with the blessing of the Echols family and the Pure Holiness Church of God Executive Board, the scholarship fund has grown into a lasting legacy. What began as a heartfelt tribute has become a steadfast commitment to investing in the future of PHC youth across multiple states.
